NOVEMBER 6, 2000

Indian voters in Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, boycotted the polls on Sunday, in a protest against the exclusion of Indian candidates from the ballot.

The Nicaragua Electoral Council ruled that the an Indian group called Yatama could not have its candidates on the ballot because they missed a deadline. In response, a series of clashes between the government and Indian residents resulted in at least one killed.

More violence was feared on election day, but Yatama urged a boycott instead. There was reportedly light turnout in Cabezas.
