DECEMBER 8, 2000

Mexican President Vicente Fox won't try to remove Indian villages and place residents into settlements in response to opposition by the country's top-ranking Indian official.

Xochitl Galvez, head of the Office of Indian Affairs, stopped the plan because she said the Indian rights would be violated. Galvez is an Otomi businesswoman tapped by Fox to help improve relations with the nation's indigenous population.
