Prospects for peace hopeful in Chiapas

The inauguration of a new President, the removal of troops from the Chiapas region, and the promise of more self-determination are factors helping Mexico's indigenous regain trust in the country.

The Chiapas region has been the center of an Indian rights movement for the past several years. But relations with the previous administration were poor and Mexico's new President, Vicente Fox, will negotiate with rebel leaders next year on ensuring peace.
