MARCH 12, 2001

Subcomandante Marcos led the Zapatistas into Mexico City on Sunday, culminating a two-week journey from the southern state of Chiapas, where their Indian rights movement began on January 1, 1994.

Approximately 100,000 supporters gathered in Mexico City to welcome the Zapatistas, who made the 2,000-mile journey through 12 states to call attention to the economic, cultural, and political issues the nation's indigenous people face. The Zapatistas plan on addressing Congress today about a long-delayed Indian self-determination bill which President Vicente Fox submitted as one of his campaign promises.
