MAY 26, 2000

Despite lack of support internationally over problems with the country's election software, the National Election Board has said Sunday's vote for President will continue with or without the "Rebel Indian" Alejandro Toledo.

Toledo plans to boycott the vote on Sunday. He has also told supporters to spoil their election ballots.

Recent polls have shown Toledo trailing behind incumbent Fujimori.

On Thursday, citizens staged protests all over Peru with violent protests occuring at the Election Headquarters in Lima.

Similar election concerns in Venezuela led the High Court to suspend elections, citing technical problems which would not allow "free and fair" balloting.
