Chief faces deportation to Bolivia

JUNE 1, 2001

Despite facing persecution in his home country for being an Indian, a chief from the Leco Aguachile Tribe faces deportation because England's immigration department says Bolivia has no record of human rights abuses.

Eduardo Wilmer Poroso, also known as Sure-yani, left Bolivia after campaigning on behalf of the tribe, whose numbers have dwindled and whose traditional territory is rich in natural resources. An appeal to his deporation will be aired next week.
