Mexico ratifies Indian rights bill
FRIDAY, JULY 13, 2001

The Mexican government on Thursday ratified an Indian rights bill that recognizes the nation's indigenous people for the first time.

Indian leaders and activists, however, say the bill is a watered down version of the one they originally supported. The bill recognizes certain self-determination rights of Indian communities but stops short of the land and natural resource assurances they sought.
