Civil war still felt in Guatemala

THURSDAY, JULY 26, 2001

The effects of Guatemala's 36-year civil war are still being felt five years after a peace agreement was reached limiting the role of the military in the country.

Mostly Mayan and Indians were killed in the war and communities today still fear the army, despite the peace accords. At least lawsuit has been filed against former military officials, charging them with genocide.

In the meantime, the army is trying to improve its public image by building roads and performing public works.
