Summit goes on without Dalai Lama

AUGUST 29, 2000 The United Nations for the Millennium World Peace Summit began on Monday, without Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, leading protesters to charge the UN with caving into Chinese pressure. The Dalai Lama was not invited to the first two days of the event for fear of offending China. He was, however, invited to the last two days but he declined. Over 1,000 religious and spiritual leaders from throughout the world attended Monday's opening. Get the Story:
