Indian racial profiling bill sought

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2001

Two Native American state legislators are planning on introducing a bill to determine if law enforcement engage in racial profiling of American Indians in South Dakota.

The bill would require law enforcement to collect information about traffic stops and police searches. Police would be required to say why a particular vehicle was stopped and the outcome of the incident.

Previous attempts to have such a bill have failed. With a state panel focusing on the issue, Democrats Sen. Ron Volesky (Huron) and Rep. Tom Van Norman (Eagle Butte) are now hoping to push it through.

Volesky is running for governor.
