The Connecticut towns of Ledyard, North Stonington, and Preston are asking the Bureau of Indian Affairs to schedule another meeting on the federal recognition petitions of two Pequot tribes.

The BIA already held one such meeting in August, attended by the towns, the state Attorney General's office, the Eastern Pequot Tribe, and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Narragannsett Tribe of Rhode Island also participated as interested parties.

The two-day meeting did not address all of the concerns addressed by the towns and the state. But at the time, and subsequently, the BIA has encouraged that more informal meetings be held.

But both the state and the towns want comments on the two tribes' petitions on the public record. They believe the BIA is biased against them.

In an interview with The New London Day, Kevin Gover said their belief was unfounded.

"To think that we're sitting up here trying to think of ways to screw southeastern Connecticut is narcissistic," said Gover.
