OCTOBER 27, 2000

The Connecticut town of Kent has voted to spend up to $200,000 on an investigation of the federal recognition petition of the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation.

The tribe has been seeking federal recognition since 1981. A federal judge recently decided to rule on the tribe's status on his own, forgoing the BIA's long administrative process.

The town will spend the money on legal, genealogical, and other research on the tribe. But haven't taken a position on either supporting or opposing the tribe's petition.

Three other towns have spent money fighting the recognition of two Pequot tribes, but when Indianz.Com asked the leader of one town to estimate how much money was spent, Robert Congdon of Preston couldn't give a value, except to say it had consumed almost all of his time on the job for the past two years.
