OCTOBER 9, 2000

Mamie Rupnicki, embroiled in a battle over tribal politics, resigned from her position as chairwoman of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Tribal Council on Saturday.

Allegations of abuse of power were made against Rupnicki. Recently, she was alleged to have acted improperly in dealing with Harrah's, the gaming company who operates the tribe's casino.

A petition had been signed to recall her from office, but the tribal council hadn't yet acted upon it yet. The tribal council, however, did author a resolution against Rupnicki, charging she abused her power in a domestic dispute involving her son.
