Tribes discuss land purchases
NOVEMBER 17, 2000

Representatives of Chemehuevis, Serrano, Cahuilla, Hualapai, and Paiute tribes of California and Arizona met in Palm Springs on Thursday to discuss land purchases and how to change environmental policy to include the Native viewpoint.

The tribes make up the Native American Land Conservancy and met for the first time yesterday. The organization was formed by the Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indian of California.

Mainstream environmentalists often oppose Native traditional practices, such as the Makah whale hunt and the Hopi taking of baby eagles.
