Will Clinton recognize tribes?

DECEMBER 15, 2000 In the final days of the Clinton administration, rumours are surfacing that the President will recognize several tribes, including three in Connecticut. In response, state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has written President Bill Clinton, asking if he will recognize the Golden Hill Paugussett, the Eastern Pequot, and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribes. Recognition of the tribes has been heavily contested by officials in the state. Although Blumenthal contends executive recognition is unprecedented, its not unheard of. Before 1978, when the recognition guidelines were established, tribes often sought recognition through executive decisions, else through Congress or through litigation. Get the Story:
