Tribes confused over recognition
DECEMBER 14, 2000

Two Nipmuc tribes in Massachusetts are expressing confusion and surprise over a decision delaying their potential federal recognition.

A decision had been expected today but was postponed because Kevin Gover has recused himself from the decision making process on their two petitions. The reason given is that he may work for a firm that is said to have connections with one of the tribes.

But one of the tribes says they have no knowledge of the firm. Both tribes already have their separate law firms.

They applied for recognition as one tribe in 1980 but one band split off in 1996.
