Nipmuc recognition held back

JANUARY 24, 2001

The Bureau of Indian Affairs on Tuesday said it is holding back its preliminary decision to recognize the Nipmuc Nation of Massachusetts so it can be reviewed by the new administration of President George W. Bush.

The tribe was extended preliminary recognition late Friday. The next day, Bush's transition team requested a delay on all decisions of the Clinton administration.

To abide by that request, the BIA won't publish the proposed finding on the tribe in the Federal Register until it can be reviewed. The BIA is also holding back the final determination of recognition for the Duwamish Tribe of Washington.
