JANUARY 9, 2001 On Monday, the federal judge who presided over the still-unresolved Oneida Nation land claim passed the case to a new judge. U.S. District Judge Neal P. McCurn, 74, cited age as part of the reason he is giving the case to Judge Lawrence E. Kahn. But over the years, McCurn had became critical of lawyers for both the tribe and the state of New York, saying neither was willing to come to a satisfactory settlement. He called off talks in September ordered a trial. McCurn is also presiding over the Cayuga Nation land claim and says he plans on seeing it through. He also oversees the Mohawk land claim.
