Ashcroft asked to back off land claims

In a letter to newly confirmed Attorney General John Ashcroft, Representative Thomas Reynolds (R-NY) has asked the Department of Justice to change its stance on Indian land claims.

Reynolds has asked the Department not to prosecute a land claim brought by the Seneca Nation to over 100,000 acres in the state. Reynolds is also asking the Department to withdraw from all its current land claims cases it has entered on behalf of tribes.
