Dodd still wants recognition reform

MARCH 16, 2001

Senator Chris Dodd (R-Conn) on Thursday said he was disappointed the Bureau of Indian Affairs continues to recognize tribes despite acknowledged flaws in the process.

Dodd last month said he would introduce legislation aimed at reforming the process sometime in the future. He was responding to what he said were troubling aspects of the preliminary recognition of the Eastern Pequot and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribes in his state.

Both tribes, however, say the BIA should keep doing its job. A comment period on the two tribes is set to end this month although Attorney General Richard Blumenthal wants yet another six-month extension. His previous extension was granted.
