Colville Tribe to rewrite gun ordinance

MARCH 20, 2001 The Natural Resources Committee of the Colville Tribal Council has pulled a proposed ban on non-Indian use of guns after receiving warnings from tribal members and local law enforcement that it would conflict with Washington state and federal law. The original proposal would have made it illegal for non-Indians to possess firearms and it proscribed fines of up to $5,000. It would have allowed non-Indian residents of the reservation to possess guns but would have restricted them to hunting with a tribal permit or transport. The tribe's Attorney's Office will rewrite the law, said a councilman. Get the Story:
