Pequot foes to meet with Congressman
MARCH 2, 2001

The leaders of the Connecticut towns of Ledyard, North Stonington, and Preston will meet today with Congressman Rob Simmons (R-Conn) to discuss their upcoming meeting with leaders of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.

The towns oppose the expansion of the reservation. They filed suit against the Department of Interior over its decision to take 165 acres of land into trust for the tribe.

They won in federal court but the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals last fall reversed the decision. The state and the towns have appealed to the Supreme Court.

Simmons previously arranged a field hearing on fee-into-trust issues and has now scheduled a March 12 meeting between the towns and tribe. But town leaders want the meeting public and don't want noted Indian rights lawyer Tom Tureen to attend the talks.

Simmons will also meet with the tribe prior to the meeting.
