MARCH 26, 2001

Layoffs and political disputes continue to resonate within the Crow Tribe of Montana, several months after the tribe elected its new leadership intended to themselves of controversial former Chairwoman Clara Nomee.

The tribe fired its accountant Friday but then rehired him because a local bank refused to cash paychecks. The tribe is working with John Donham to see if they might keep him on as accountant.

The tribe laid off 68 two weeks ago, citing budget problems. Tribal spokesman Leroy Not Afraid says the tribe hasn't received its share of federal funds, which he attributed to the lack of a new Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs in the Department of Interior.

The tribe is also being sued by a lawyer representing ousted secretary Tilton Old Bull, Sr. Old Bull has been critical of the new adminstration and his lawyer has filed a class action lawsuit against tribal officials, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and a local bank, saying the tribe has mismanaged its finances.
