Tribal tax case discussed

MARCH 29, 2001

Opponents and supporters of a hotel tax imposed by the Navajo Nation discussed their views with Jodi Rave of the Lincoln Journal Star.

Opponents say tribes don't have authority over non-Indian activities on non-Indian land. They say the tax is illegal and should be struck down.

Supporters say the tax is a sovereign right of any government. They counter suggestions that it is taxation without representation.

The Supreme Court heard arguments this past Tuesday. A lower appeals court upheld the tax.
