Cherokee Nation cross-deputizes

MARCH 30, 2001 In an attempt to eliminate jurisdictional confusions, the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma has entered into a number of cross-deputization agreements with law enforcement throughout the state. The tribe's agreement with law enforcement in Cherokee, Wagoner, Adair and Sequoyah counties is on hold, though. Principal Chief Chad Smith is currently involved in a legal dispute with District Attorney Dianne Barker. Barker said she won't consider any agreements until Smith drops his lawsuit against Cherokee County for an assault and battery arrest in 1997. Get the Story:
