State seeks recognition extension

MARCH 8, 2001 Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal this week asked the Bureau of Indian Affairs to extend by six months the public comment period on two Pequot tribes because he says he hasn't received all the necessary documentation regarding their federal recognition. The BIA last fall already extended by six months the comment period on the Eastern Pequot and Paucatucket Eastern Pequot Tribes. If Blumenthal's request is not granted, the period will close at the end of this month. Blumenthal says the state won't be able to file any public comments because it hasn't rececived all the documents and other materials it has requested under the Freedom of Information Act. Eastern Pequot leaders said his request was yet another attempt to stall. Blumenthal has also filed a lawsuit against the Interior over the tribes. Get the Story:
