MARCH 9, 2001

Officials in Connecticut are struggling to deal with gaming, federal recognition, and other Indian issues but not everyone wants to try and find solutions to problems which may arise as a result.

State lawmakers have proposed to transfer the Connecticut Indian Affairs Council from the Department of Environmental Protection to the Office of Policy and Management. But the head of the OPM said he doesn't want to take on any additional duties related to tribes.

The state has recognized a number of tribes since the late 1600s. They have been largely neglected since until state leaders realized they could obtain federal recognition.
