Pequot proposal awaits official response

APRIL 11, 2001

Leaders of three Connecticut towns met with freshman Congressman Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) on Tuesday to talk about how to proceed with a land settlement proposal submitted by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.

An official response probably won't come until next week. But for now, town leaders are saying the proposal does not address many of their issues.

Their biggest is that they want the tribe to define an upper limit to the amount of land they want taken into trust by the federal government. Their legal position is that the reservation shouldn't be expanded at all because they say the 1983 Mashantucket Pequot Settlement Act define the borders forever.
