Trust land regulations in limbo

APRIL 12, 2001 New regulations which make if more difficult for tribes to add land to their reservations are in limbo pending approval by the Bush administration. The new regulations were published in the Federal Register on January 16. The new adminsitration has delayed by 60 days its effective date, as it has all other regulations published in the final days of the Clinton administration. A decision on whether to keep them is expected Monday. The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) has been urging their approval, despite some concerns that Alaska Natives and landless tribes weren't addressed. Get the Story:
