Pequot proposal criticized as vague

APRIL 12, 2001

Residents and leaders of three Connecticut towns are criticizing as vague a proposal offered by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation to settle a long-running dispute over land.

Town leaders say they are reading over the tribe's proposal, presented in a letter, to check for loopholes. They say they will be expressing their issues through freshman Congressman Rob Simmons (R-Conn.), the mediator between the two parties.

Along with Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, the towns of Ledyard, North Stonington, and Preston are suing the Department of Interior over its decision to take 165 acres of land into trust for the tribe. The state lost the case before the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals last fall and have asked the Supreme Court to review it.
