In an age-old Indian-European tradition, Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation Chairman Kenneth Reels and North Stonington First Selectman Nicholas Mullane recently exchanged gifts in Connecticut.

Reels gave Mullane a strand of wampum. Mullane gave Reels a paperweight rock with the word "Hope" on it.

The exchange comes after Reels gave Mullane an eagle feather at a recent meeting between between the tribe and three neighboring towns. Although he said he appreciated the gift, Mullane became worried his possession of the eagle feather might violate federal law.

So he and Reels decided it would be appropriate to exchange other gifts.
