Towns don't want recognition moratorium

APRIL 30, 2001

The Northeastern Connecticut Council of Governments on Friday turned down a proposal from three anti-Pequot towns to ask the federal government to issue a moratorium on federal recognition decisions.

The council was asked by the member towns of Ledyard, Preston and North Stonington to sign a letter calling for a moratorium. The council declined and an official said the council shouldn't interfere with the Bureau of Indian Affairs so long as the recognition process is fair.

The three towns are suing the BIA for agreeing to grant preliminary recognition to the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe.
