APRIL 6, 2001 Amid allegations the tribe is going bankrupt, the Crow Tribe of Montana expects to pay its employees today. The tribe is paying employees using its federally and treaty obligated trust fund, said spokesperson Leroy Not Afraid on Thursday. The tribe worked with Sovereign Development Corporation, an Indian-owned company in Washington, to ensure the payment arrived in time to cover payroll checks. The tribe's accountant quit earlier this week and said the tribe wouldn't be able to make payroll today unless it laid off hundreds of employees. The tribe has already laid off 70 employees.
