A couple who refused to stop construction on their new house have been ordered to stop by a Superior Court Judge in Highgate, Vermont.

The Division of Historic Preservation confirmed the presence of Abenaki human remains at the site. Other Abenaki burials have been discovered in the area in the past.

Vermont law makes intentional removal or excavation of human remains a felony punishable by up to 15 years and a $10,000 fine.
