Residents of the Connecticut town of North Stonington on Monday approved a $13.9 million budget that includes at least $118,000 to fight three Pequot tribes.

The budget passed by a 71-15 vote includes money for the town's fight against the expansion of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the federal recognition of two tribes. The amount, however, is lower than the $130,000 previously suggested now that the Supreme Court has rejected the state of Connecticut's appeal on the issue.

Some $65,000 has been approved to fight the federal recognition petitions of the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe. Eastern vice-chairman Mark Sebastian asked for a breakdown in those costs, noting the town had only approved $35,000 for senior citizens.
