Tribe tries to prove existence

MAY 22, 2001

One of the biggest tasks facing the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe is to prove to the Bureau of Indian Affairs the tribe has existed prior to 1973.

That is the date of an apparent split between the Paucatucks and the Eastern Pequot Tribe. Although the BIA granted preliminary recognition to both tribes, researchers said there is no evidence the Paucatuck Tribe existed before 1973.

Eric D. Eberhard is a Seattle lawyer hired by the tribe to beef up and address these sort of issues. The tribe is set to hear a final decision on its federal recognition in December.
