Cherokee council overrides Chief Smith

The tribal council of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma has overriden three vetoes by Chief Chad Smith. With the overrides, the council has
  • approved legislation that grants subpoena powers tothe council
  • approved the purchase of 45 acres next to the Hastings Indian Hospital in Tahlequah for $540,000
  • made the council the recipient of funding from the Cherokee Nation Housing Authority
The overrides were the first since Smith took office in August 1999.
