Judge sets Oneida Nation deadline

JUNE 2, 2000 A US District Court Judge has ordered the Oneida Nation of New York and the counties of Oneida and Madison to come to a compromise by June 9 or face a trial. The two have been attempting settlement talks since 1985, when the Oneida Nation won their land claims case against the state. In the 18th and 19th centuries, 250,000 acres were illegaly transferred from the Nation to the state, in violation of the 1790 Non-Intercourse Act. Get the Story:
