JUNE 22, 2001

Leonard Peltier foe Louis J. Freeh had his last day on the job as director of the FBI on Thursday.

Attorney General John Ashcroft praised Freeh for his efforts during his past eight years of service. Freeh was picked for the job by President Clinton, although the two came to disagree on a number of high-profile issues.

Freeh has not stated his plans. The White House is near naming Robert S. Mueller III as his replacement, say administration sources.
