Indians disproportionate in Mont. jails

American Indians are only 6 percent of the population in Montana but make up a disproportionate amount of the state's prison population, according to Census Bureau figures.

The total prison population was 2,174. Of that amount, 20.5 percent were Native American.

State Department of Corrections figures show that 15.8 percent of male prisoners were Native American while 27.8 of female prisoners were Native.
