Recognition sought by Tuscaroras

JUNE 26, 2001

Four groups of Tuscarora descendants in North Carolina have formed a committee to seek federal recognition.

The historic Tuscarora tribe lived on the eastern seaboard from Virginia to South Carolina. After being forced to northeastern North Carolina, some moved to New York to form the Tuscarora Nation, a federally recognized tribe.

North Carolina recognizes six tribes. The Eastern Cherokee are the only tribe with federal recognition.

Two other Tuscarora tribes are seeking federal acknowledgment separate from the four who have joined together.
