Squaw law affects all names
JUNE 27, 2000

The Maine law which requires all public place names containing the word "squaw" to be changed goes into effect August 11.

Although private landowners can continue refer to their property as they like, the law does not exempt them from the change. But private businesses like the "Big Squaw Mountain" are not affected by the law.

County and local governments have six months to make the change. About two dozen names are expected to change.

Other states, such as Nebraska, Oregon, and Oklahoma have considered or are considering changing squaw place names.
