The Jicarilla Tribe of New Mexico and Rio Arriba county have long battled over the existence of a road that now lies on land belonging the tribe. The tribe bought the Chama Land and Cattle Ranch Company in the 1990s and the Department of Interior placed it into trust.

The county believes it has rights to use a road it claims it is public. Officials recently cut a lock in order to enter the tribe's land and began surveying the land, planning to open up the road for public use.

The tribe intends to take the county court yet again over the road. The New Mexico Supreme Court ruled that state courts have jurisdiction over the matter.
