Grandparents' rights limited

JUNE 6, 2000

The Supreme Court limited the rights of grandparents by ruling that a Washington state law granted too much power in allowing grandparents and others to obtain court ordered visitation rights of children. The ruling does not appear to directly affect similar grandparent-visition laws in other states. Courts in Washington will be advised not to use the law.

The case is Troxel v. Granville.
