Cherokee Nation gets new lawman

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma will swear in David E. Roberts, a 30-year law enforcement veteran, as director of the tribe's law enforcement. The Cherokee man will replace the acting director of the tribe's marshal service, which was taken over by the BIA in 1997 after a tribal dispute involving a raid of the offices of then-Chief Joe Byrd, who fired the eight employees. The Cherokee Nation resumed control of the serivce in November of 1999.
