Judge keeps Mohawk land claim in court

JUNE 7, 2001 Rejecting a number of arguments made by the state of New York, a federal judge last week ruled that a land claim brought by Mohawks in Canada and the United States can continue. The St. Regis Mohawk of Canada and the New York Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs are suing for return of 15,000 acres of land promsied in various treaties. The Mohawks claim the state illegaly transferred the land out of tribal control and in violation of federal law. Get the Story:
