JULY 10, 2000

Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo) wants to designate 12,480 acres a national historic site to commemorate the site of the 1864 Sand Creek massacre. During the massacre, United States soldiers slaughtered Cheyenne and Arapaho men, women, and children who were flying the flag of peace.

Campbell may introduce his proposal before Congress as early as this week. The proposal would require the government to purchase the historic site from willing, private landowners. Only one party has agreed to sell 1,500 acres for the monument.
