Chairman removed from duties

JULY 14, 2000

John "Rocky" Barrett Jr has been stripped of his duties as tribal adminstrator of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation by the tribe's business committee. He still retains the title of chairman, but won't get paid, so he's heading to tribal court to get back on the payroll and use a tribal car.

The business committee fired him as tribal adminstrator on Wednesday night.

Barrett has been an outspoken leader but has led the tribe to financial success and legal victory.

Most recently, he was involved in a dispute over the bidding process of county land. Barrett came under attack by a non-native landowner for bidding on land that the Tribe also wanted to buy from the local conservation district.

The Oklahoma state District Attorney looked into the matter and cleared Barrett of any wrongdoing.
