Bush considering status of Mexican immigrants

MONDAY, JULY 16, 2001

The Bush administration is working with the Mexican government to develop an initiative affecting as many as 3 million illegal Mexican immigrants who live in the United States.

One idea under discussion is granting legal residency to the immigrants. But this is opposed by conservatives in Congress, who would have to approve amnesty.

President Bush and Mexican President Vicente Fox will be holding a summit in Washington, DC, starting September 4 and will announce the initiative then.
