The Golden Hill Paugussett Tribe, a state-recognized tribe, plan to file land claims representing 700,000 acres of land throughout the state of Connecticut in hopes of pressing forward their attempt to gain federal recognition.

The tribe filed a claim for 17,000 acres in 1993, including areas in Bridgeport. Leaders from the town were upset at the time, but have said they now support the tribe's effort to receive recognition so long as they can get a casino out of the deal.

The towns of Shelton, Colchester, Kent, Orange, Monroe, Trumbull, and New Milford have banded together against the tribe.

The BIA is near a decision on the tribe's petition. The BIA turned them down twice in the past, but have reconsidered their petition in light of several questions that arose during the process.
